Īs for Metric Halo, I would contact them and ask them why their plugin doesn't show inputs 3/4 in Reaper. If you want you can head over to the pre-release section of the forumĪnd check it out, or wait until Reaper 5 is officially released, which will maybe be still a few month though (uneducated guess). Reaper doesn't have VST3 support currently in the official version, but it's coming in Reaper 5 which is currently in (public) beta stage. Regarding Waves plugins for example, if you look hereĪnd from what I've read external sidechain in Waves plugins (and possibly others you listed) is indeed only supported with VST3 hosts. But it makes a killer crossword puzzle :)
So just to experiment, I kept clicking the plus sign and now it shows 48 inputs on this VST, yet it's obvious that this VST doesn't really have 48 inputs, so maybe inputs 3 & 4 aren't "real" either. Even though it did add inputs 3 & 4 to the Pin Connector, they aren't passing signal to the sidechain of the VST. Sidechaining is a well known concept in reaper. If you want it like you are used in other DAW have a look at Pre5. Activate:Inform Vst when track channel count changes. Click on the plus-sign and go to compatibility settings. Maybe you have to change settings in your VST.
In the routing windows make Track channels=4. It is often preferable for the plugin to do the thinking, especially with modeling plugins, since they react in specific ways to the incoming signal.Ĭould it be possible that other DAWs are utilizing some other aspect of VST to feed the external sidechain inputs on all these plugins? Maybe they aren't "inputs" per se, but some other aspect of the VST API that Reaper hasn't tapped into yet? You need to use Reaper's parameter modulation system to work around it (which is in fact a great thing, since you can sidechain ANY parameter you want!) Hitting the + icon only opens more channels on the same 2 inputs, it doesn't add inputs 3/4. It actually uses the term "External" in the GUI on it's detector switches, works fine in other DAWs, yet it only registers 2 inputs in Reaper Pin Connector. To toggle the state, click the Sidechain routing switch."īut just in case you still don't believe me, let's mention Waves C6 Compressor. The Sidechain routing switches allow you to choose the input to the level detector from the sidechain (key) input or the signal being processed. Most DAWs allow you to specify an input or bus as the source for ChannelStrip’s sidechain input. Under some circumstances, you may want to use a different signal to open the gate or compress the signal. By default, the level detectors in the dynamics processors key off of the signal that they are processing.
dll can use external sidechain with no problems in Ableton Live and Magix Samplitude, to name a couple DAWs, the Metric Halo manual states: "Each sidechain routing switch allows you to control the signal sent to the sidechain input of its associated gate or compressor. That is not true at all! Besides the fact that the same. They didn't implement external sidechain to their plugin - so it doesn't have sidechain inputs, at least not in the VST format Learn Reaper a bit and you will see it's possible. I'm 100% certain it's a similar situation with other plugins you want to sidechain. And external sidechain WILL work with that one - a simple drag and drop is all it takes. You will see this in Reaper as soon as you open the plugin, one should say "2 in 2 out", the other should say "4 in 2 out". It has two plugin variants, one has external sidechain inputs, the other doesn't.
If the plugin shows only two inputs, it means it CANNOT do sidechaining via external signal! In this case, as mentioned above, you need to use Reaper's parameter modulation system to work around it (which is in fact a great thing, since you can sidechain ANY parameter you want!).ĮDIT: I have also demoed WaveArts TrackPlug. If you want to sidechain this plugin, utilize Reaper's parameter modulation on compressor's Threshold slider. They have internal sidechain via EQ filtering, but that's about it. They didn't implement external sidechain to their plugin - so it doesn't have sidechain inputs, at least not in the VST format.
